Agriculture is the backbone of Uganda’s economy, employing 70% of the population, and contributing half of Uganda’s export earnings and a quarter of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
Uganda is a landlocked and fertile country with many lakes and rivers. Some 75% of the population live in rural areas and rely on subsistence agriculture. Agriculture works with rural Ugandans to increase the value of their harvests through better farming practices and simple processing of any surplus they produce. We help them find ways of earning a living that are suited to their natural environment, so they can improve their lives without damaging the natural resources they rely on.
We also support rural communities so they can have more of a voice in shaping the policies that affect their lives. We have experienced in the Pharma & FMCG industry. We have a project to work in the Agriculture development plan in Uganda in the following agriculture sector:
The oil industry is currently exhibiting healthy growth rates. The market has been primarily driven by the growing awareness of the nutritional and health benefits. Moreover, rising Soya & Avocado oil demand from the healthcare industry is also expected to create a positive impact on the growth of the market.
Agriculture has the potential to significantly increase its contribution to economic growth and poverty reduction. It has been estimated that if agriculture in Uganda grew, as experienced in the last eight years, the poverty rate would be reduced modestly to 27% by 2030. However if greater investments were made in agriculture and the sector grew at 5.9% per year to 2030, the national poverty rate would be reduced by an a0dditional 9% points to 18% of the population and absolute number of poor people to 6.9 million. Therefore, investing more in agriculture to achieve higher economic growth rates is an effective vehicle for reducing poverty.
Moringa Frontiers (U) Limited will be a center of excellence for processing dairy products. The purpose of the company is to be innovative as far as Agriculture Sector in Uganda is concerned through adaptation to new technologies and climate smart farming.

1.SOYA BEAN OIL
2.AVOCADO OIL
Soya bean oil is obtained from the seeds either by pressing or solvent extraction method. It is the highest volume vegetable oil produced. The oil content in the seed is about 20 % on dry basis. The crude Soya bean oil of good quality has a light amber color, which upon alkali refining is reduced to the light yellow color of most vegetable seed oils. Soya bean oil produced from green or immature beans may contain sufficient chlorophyll to have a greenish cast but this is not usually very evident until after the yellow – red pigments of the oil have been bleached in hydrogenation. Oil produced from badly damaged beans may have a dark brown color, which will be very difficult to remove by refining. The crude oil particularly obtained by solvent extraction method contains relatively large amounts (1.5–2.5 %) of non-glyceride materials consisting mainly of phosphatides. The FFA content of good crude Soya bean oil is slightly in excess of 0.5 %.
The Soya bean oil is extracted from the seed by Solvent Extraction Method. It is a process of diffusion of solvent in to the oil bearing cells of the raw material resulting a solution of the oil in the solvent “Hexane”. The entire process is largely divide in to three main sections as follows:
An efficient extraction would need that every oil bearing cell of the material is in contact with solvent. Smaller the material size, better the penetration of the solvent in to the oil bearing cells, but to fine a size will prevent the solvent from percolating through the mass. Hence an optimum size is absolutely essential for efficient extraction. To achieve this Soya bean seeds are passed through expanders after cracking, cooking and flaking.
The prepared material is received in to extraction plant. The extraction chamber consists of a number of solvent sprayers, which sprays the solvent over the entire bed of raw material. The length & breadth is designed to give sufficient time for intimate contact penetration and percolation of solvent in to raw material. The material coming out of the spraying chamber is deoiled material with solvent which is recovered in the desolventising section, while the mixture of Oil and solvent called Miscella is pumped in to miscella tank, from where it is transferred to desolventiser.
The extracted material has a tendency for retaining the solvent with it, and this solvent has to be recovered. The retention varies from 20 % to 35 % weight of the material extracted. The basic principle involved in desolventisation is direct and indirect heating of material with steam to a temperature well above boiling point of solvent and thus entrusting no solvent is left over with material. Vapors of solvent are sent to scrubber, where the solvent to trace vapors is washed. The De oiled and desolventised meal thus obtained is then transported to bagging section with the help of a conveyor. A cooling arrangements is provided to ensure proper cooling of the material for easy bagging and hold moisture 10-12 %.
Mixture of Oil and solvent obtained in the extractor is known as miscella and it normally contains 12% to 18 % of the oil un the solvent. Distillation is performed in three stages under vacuum to ensure that no oxygen is present when the oil is heated to a high temperature. First evaporation takes place in Economizer and concentrates in the first and second, flasher leaving practically only oil behind. This oil is further treated with open steam to ensure that no solvent finds its way along with the oil. The solvent vapors thus produced passes through Oil – vapor separator to separate out any oil particles strapped with the solvent vapors and are then passed to condenser for condensation.
Avocado is a subtropical/tropical fruit with creamy texture, peculiar flavor, and high nutritional value. Due to its high oil content, a significant quantity of avocado fruit is used for the production of oil using different methods. Avocado oil is rich in lipid-soluble bioactive compounds, but their content depends on different factors. Several phytochemicals in the oil have been linked to prevention of cancer, age-related macular degeneration, and cardiovascular diseases and therefore have generated an increase in consumer demand for avocado oil. Global data show that significant quantities of avocado are designated for oil production, although it is not enough to meet consumer demand. Preferences for avocado oil are based on its sensory properties, color, consistency, and high content of health-promoting LSBC. The most used method for the extraction of avocado oil is the use of solvents;
however, cold pressing is used to produce avocado oil for culinary uses, although with less yields. Alternative methods have emerged in order to enhance the yield and maintain desirable characteristics of the avocado oil, resulting SFE-CO2, LPG, and UAA the most efficient. The different extraction methods and the conditions of the raw materials affect the different types of avocado oil (raw, virgin, and refined) and result in a wide variability in yield, physicochemical characteristics, nutritional properties, and LSBC content.
Currently, avocado oil is used for the production of structured lipids, using immobilized lipases to modify the positional distribution of fatty acids in the glycerol backbone to increase the nutritional properties. In addition, it is used as a source of phospholipids in the production of emulsions and natural surfactants for the food industry due to its interfacial characteristics, improving palatability properties and significantly increasing the bioavailability formulated O/W nanoe mulsions with 10% of avocado oil and observed an improvement in properties such as dispersibility of water in the encapsulated oil and good physical and chemical stability, increasing the bioavailability of health-promoting LSBC.
Avocado oil has a great potential as food ingredient due to its functionality for multiple emulsions. Furthermore, it has been also employed as organic phase for interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions, which presented viscosity properties that favored the ion transfer at the liquid/liquid interface.
Avocado oil is mainly obtained by mechanical (cold pressing) and chemical (use of organic solvents) methods from the flesh of avocado fruit, although occasionally it is also extracted from the skin and the seed. Fruit cultivar, maturity stage, extraction method, fruit tissue type, and different extraction conditions such as pH, temperature, or added enzymes are factors determining the avocado oil yield and quality. The commonly produced oil has the quality grade for culinary uses, but it is usually further refined for the cosmetic industry.
Avocado is mostly consumed fresh, but the recent demand for avocado oil has increased considerably due to its potential use in the culinary and cosmetic industries, and its beneficial effects on human health. Usually, the avocado oils producing the waste of the fruit harvested to be sold as fresh in the local/international market.
The type and kind of fruit used, obviously, changes the quality(taste and acidity) of the avocado oil produced.
In our experience, the «crude» avocado oil is produced using the fruits of the lowest quality grade (mature avocados, dented mature avocados, etc.), instead, the « extra virgin» avocado oil is produced using these cond/third quality of the fruit (green avocados, dented green avocados, etc.).
Both kind of processes start after a controlled ripening of the avocado (1-2weeks, depending on the fruit) in a conditioned room with constant temperature.
Starting from100% of avocados, on average, the effluents are:
Avocado oil is also used for the treatment of major health-related problems such as coronary heart diseases and cholesterol. Overall, the avocado oil market has set its footprint in three major industries, which is expected to boost the demand for avocado oil in the future.
More than 40% companies in the avocado oil market are focused on increasing their production. Prominent companies are mainly focused on offering their products through online retailers and brick and mortar stores. Product launches have also increased since the last four years in the avocado oil market, and emerging companies are focused on improving their packaging formats to target specific consumers who are willing to try new on-the-shelf retail products. Compared to other end uses, the demand for avocado oil in the retail sector is expected to be more than 70% over the forecast period.
Global avocado fruit production has reached five million metric ton, and annual production is expected to increase by nearly 200,000 metric tons. Mexico produces around 1.8 million metric tons of avocado fruit. Countries including Colombia, Peru, Chile, Kenya, and Indonesia are also anticipated to increase their production capacity. The quality and availability of raw materials will surely affect market growth. In the global avocado oil market, extensive availability of raw material will push the market growth to a greater extent.
